Sop It Up With a Disco Biscuit

By Will Jordan

Philadelphia-based jam band The Disco Biscuits continue to serve up tasty roots music they only way they know how, with dizzying instrumentation, catchy lyricsizing and harmonizing.
Following the release of their double live album The Wind at Four to Fly on SCI Fidelity Records, the Disco Biscuits have hit the road again this time with a new drummer, Allen Aucoin.
“We’re staying busy…You know, the life of a jam band rock star,” laughs Aucoin.
The auditioning process was lengthy but they found that Aucoin jumped straight in, meshing with the Biscuits' in the groove, solid feeling called BISCO.
The Disco Biscuits are back in fine form after the departure of Sam Altman and a hiatus and are ready to greet the New Year with cross country touring and a wildly diverse live album.
“Sam wanted to go to medical school and has talked about it for two years. They got their heads together to find out what they wanted to do and recruited me,” he says. “We’ve spent a lot of time on the road and seven to nine hours a day in the practice room just trying to keep the solid 80 or so DB songs in rotation.”
The first leg of the tour was a string of dates on the east coast, and they’ll be all over the US this summer revolving around major music festivals.
“The past run was awesome,” Aucain says. “We played really well together. Everyone is really sounding their best.”
The Biscuits are better suited for a festival audience than an indoor venue, according to Aucoin.
“There’s a little more pressure at a festival, but we always put on our best performances,” he says.
Aucain says the Biscuits are currently working on a new album and he hopes they will have at least 15 songs in a couple of months.
“Maybe at the end of the year, we’ll have a new album,” he says. “We’ll see what happens with the live album first.”
2006 marks The Disco Biscuits eleventh year of rocking out in their unique musical smorgasbord style which fuses rock, electronic and classical music.
The band met at the University of Pennsylvania in 1995 and started off with frat gigs but made the quick switch to the club scene. Their eclectic live shows gained them a rabid following, making them leaders in the jam and groove scene.
