Boot Camp Click Lacing Boots

For Battle—Better Duck Down

By Will Jordan

The Boot Camp Click hunkered down in their NYC bunker this summer putting the finishing touches on their latest endeavor, The Last Stand.
All eight members of the BCC Click (including Rock of Heltah Skeltah) actively participated on the effort, which is a long time coming for both fans as well as group members. There are no outside guest appearances though production credits on the new album include: Pete Rock, Large Professor, Beatminerz, 9th Wonder, Coptic and Marco Polo.
I caught up with Tek who was chillin’ at his crib before embarking on a 35 city national tour. Back in the day I was a big BCC fan and amassed an expansive collection of their albums so its nice to catch up with an underground, east coast hip hop hero.
“It was like a family reunion,” he says in between chastising his pit bull who continues to bark in the background. “It’s about time too. The music’s been calling for it.”
Ironically my dog Chester starts to bark too. He laughs and it gives us something else to talk about.”
Tek maintains there’s no beef between the crew, despite some member’s independent spin-off success.
“We wanted to test the waters again,” he says. “Hip hop is finally getting what it has needed. We’re gonna open New Yorkers eyes to a while new era…a new style if music.”
While Tek’s unafraid to challenge other hip hop acts for the throne, he’s also not ashamed to pass out props.
“Out east everybody is having their time,” he says. “I’m not a hater in any way. I enjoy all music. It’s eveybody’s time to shine.”
The lyricist says it was a cut up in the studio with all the fellas finally kicking it again.
“it was hilarious,” Tek laughs. “It’s crazy. We’ve just been seperated by nothing but a phone call or e-mail. We haven’t all hung out in so long. It was about time.
And while he’s all about loyalty to Boot Camp, Tek’s not above plugging his own independent outfit, Smif ‘n’ Wesson.
“Tek and Steel are reloaded again. We’ll always be the same two regardless of what’s up,” he says. “They can’t stop the dogs. We’re working on a new joint right now of unreleased tracks. We’re constantly grinding. We play hard, but we work even harder.”
